Future Home - Tech & Humanities Fusion Salon at Tsinghua University Future Home - Tech & Humanities Fusion Salon at Tsinghua University
On June 20, 2025, the Tsinghua University Art and Science Research Center, co-organized by the Design Institute of Daily Use and the Design Management Research Institute of the Tsinghua University Art and Science Research Center, held a thematic salon titled "Future Home - The Fusion of Technology and Humanities" at the C528 Academic Hall of the Tsinghua University School of Fine Arts.
Sponsored by NetEase News and Anxin Flooring, the salon brought together experts from academia, the design industry, industry, and the corporate sector to deconstruct the trajectory of "home" transformation. The salon focused on three key themes: the rebirth and transformation of traditional culture in the contemporary era, the systematic disintegration and reconstruction of family functions in the wave of technology, and the synergy between industry and humanities. These themes were analyzed from the perspectives of sociology, cognitive psychology, and interdisciplinary studies. This event was a deep dialogue from academic theory to industrial forefront, attracting nearly 200 attendees.
Speakers at the forum included: Ma Sai, Dean of the School of Fine Arts and Director of the Tsinghua University Art and Science Research Center; Hang Jian, Professor of Humanities at Tsinghua University and historian of design; Cai Jun, Director of the Design Management Research Institute of the Tsinghua University Art and Science Research Center; Yu Lianzhan, Director of the Department of Environmental Art Design at the School of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University; Song Wenwen, Deputy Director of the Color Research Institute of the Tsinghua University Art and Science Research Center; Ju Qi, Secretary-General of the World Furniture Association and Vice President of the Asia Furniture Association; Du Yun, General Manager of BDL International Architectural Consultants Co., Ltd.; Tian Haian, President of Beijing Qingshang Holding Group Co., Ltd.; Sun Penglu, General Manager of the Real Estate, Home & Local Business Division of NetEase Media; Lu Weiguang, Chairman of Anxin Flooring; and Gaoyi Qiang, founder of the Ideal Home Initiative of Daily Use. Professor Cui Xiaosheng of the Department of Environmental Art Design at the School of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University, moderated the salon.

The salon's opening speech was delivered by Ma Sai, Dean of the School of Fine Arts and Director of the Tsinghua University Art and Science Research Center. He emphasized that "home" is a cross-point of many fields, including humanity, technology, and intelligence. The theme of the salon, centered around "home," covers various professional fields of the school and has a positive driving force. He mentioned that the logo of the School of Fine Arts contains four auxiliary graphics, representing "clothing, food, housing, and transportation," and that many professional directions, such as environmental art, industrial design, ceramics, dyeing and weaving, and clothing, are all contained in the specific space of "home." He expressed his hope that through this salon, the essence of living can be re-examined from the dual perspectives of technology and humanities.

Hang Jian, Professor of Humanities at Tsinghua University and historian of design, focused on the iteration of the "functional home" from the perspective of sociology and humanism. He analyzed the complex transformation and internal relationship between traditional and contemporary homes, and the evolution of human family structure and function. He pointed out that the current family has shifted from an omnipotent community to a core unit of emotional consumption, with traditional functions such as economy, education, and elderly care gradually transferring to social systems. He emphasized that the exploration of the future home is a cutting-edge topic globally, and this salon, with the theme of "Future Home - The Fusion of Technology and Humanities," is timely and thought-provoking.

Cai Jun, Professor of the School of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University, discussed the theme of "Home, Transformation, Trend, Future" from the perspective of the evolution of the consumer society. He analyzed the trajectory of China's family changes based on the main characteristics of the family in the agricultural society. He proposed the judgment that Chinese families are heading towards the "Fifth Consumer Society" and constructed the "New Home Ethics" concept that transcends urban-rural contradictions or Western and Chinese divisions. This concept contains a more inclusive ethical paradigm, integrating the wisdom of the agrarian civilization and the coexistence concept of ecologicalism, while respecting the modern value of individual freedom and reconstructing the spiritual bond of community connection.

Du Yun, General Manager of BDL International Architectural Consultants Co., Ltd., discussed the essence of home from the perspective of technological development. He used Lin Yude's "Memory Map" as an introduction and proposed the core view that "memory is the gene of home." Based on the logic of "the confrontation between technological rationality and human memory," he explained the uniqueness and irreplaceability of home through the practice of resisting standardized products with personal life memories. He also discussed the current dilemma of Chinese aesthetics: the disconnection of elite culture leads to the lack of mass aesthetics, making the design field gradually evolve into a contest between "cheap" and "expensive."

Sun Penglu, General Manager of the Real Estate, Home & Local Business Division of NetEase Media, discussed the theme of "Embracing the Home Era." He analyzed the industry transformation point of the剝離房地產(chǎn)業(yè)務(wù)的金融屬性, supported by concrete data of 650 adjustment policies in 2021 and data on real estate enterprises transforming (60% of real estate enterprises turning to product improvement). He proposed the "emotional value design" concept, defining the precise transformation direction of the design industry from "beautifier" to "demand translator." Finally, he introduced the strategic value of the NetEase Cloud Market platform, highlighting its internet platform characteristics through its operation model linking 1.5 million designers and cross-border enterprises.

Gaoyi Qiang, founder of the Ideal Home Initiative of Daily Use, discussed the theme of "Reweaving the Boundaries of 'Home'." He analyzed the case of Toyota's "Woven City" and the direction of localization in China. He proposed that "home is the intersection of various industries, and the research on home is essentially the exploration of future cross-industry experiments." He analyzed the four design trends of smart living presented in Toyota's "Woven City" smart city experiment from the dimensions of technology realization, cultural translation, and industrial collaboration. He also discussed the research direction of China's ideal home in the future from the perspectives of technology path, cultural transformation, and collaborative model.

The second unit of the salon on June 20 focused on the theme of "Technology, Culture, and Integration." Academic moderator Cui Xiaosheng proposed topics from the perspective of the vision of the ideal home, using the home as a carrier or anchor to achieve interdisciplinary research and practice.

The "home" of intelligent weaving needs to be rooted in the oriental gene map and intertwined to grow naturally in the historical context. As a permanent topic of human civilization, "home" has always been a discussion topic in the field of design and even multi-disciplinary. From the Chinese context of "home, house, room, hall, house, room" to the Min dialect "cuo," from English "home, house, family, Abode," the expressions of "home" in different languages together outline the semantic boundaries of this concept. This salon, with the theme of "home" as the starting point, leads us to return to this basic proposition and re-examine this ancient and ever-new topic from a cross-disciplinary perspective, combining technology, humanities, psychology, and other multiple dimensions.
This academic salon focuses on "cross-border integration and industry-academia linkage," gathering top scholars and practitioners in the fields of art, science, engineering, and humanities to discuss future design trends, stimulating innovative design thinking. The value of the salon lies in building a dialogue bridge between academic research and industrial needs, promoting in-depth exploration of cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, sustainable design, and digital art. It is expected that through a series of academic exchanges, the transformation of design achievements, the opening up of new industries, and the coordinated realization of social value will be further promoted.
